Looking forward

by E.P. on January 10, 2010

We’ve established that 2009 was a pretty good year around these parts. I can’t complain, and I’m really looking forward to this new year and all that it could possibly bring about.

I was thinking the other day about resolutions, about the goals I set for myself last year, how I did with those and what I want to accomplish this year.

So I’m resolving the following…

  1. Be all here. This will be a lot easier this year, thanks in part to being where I want to be, being with my boy again and being in a town that is larger than 50K. I want to live each moment to the fullest in this new year, and take advantage of every new opportunity that presents itself.
  2. Be active. I’ve been inactive for entirely too long, and I want to be fit again. I don’t want to spend hours a day at the gym, and I don’t want to lose weight, but I do want to feel better by working out a few times a week. And I want my pants to fit.
  3. Along the same lines, be choosy about what I eat. Now, more than ever, I am paying attention to what I put into my body. I feel better whenever I eat healthier foods, and I want to continue this. I also want us to join a CSA, so I’ll have all kinds of fruits and veggies throughout the spring and summer to enjoy.
  4. Volunteer. Find an organization I like, and help out!
  5. Compete. Once I start working out, I want to train for a race or a triathlon. I don’t remember the last time I competed, and I would love to pursue that this year. And since I have photographed at least four triathlons, I have a hankering to try one of those, too. … Who wants to join me in these?
  6. Write more. For myself AND for any freelance projects that may come my way.
  7. Stand on my own two feet, financially, with freelance photography. This one is a bit of a reach, especially since none of my freelance projects have panned out yet. (Note to self: Update portfolio site with new location. Small steps…) However, by the end of the year, I’d like to be in the position where I could go full-time freelance.
  8. Be brave. Do something every day that scares me or puts me on edge. I’m not talking thrill-seeker stuff, but life stuff. For example, I’m scared of spiders, being alone in our big house for extended periods of time and driving in winter-y conditions. … Do something pertaining to these.

What are your resolutions/goals for the new year?

I really love the goal of “be all here.” I find myself often anticipating what's next or fretting about the past — I think being present in what's currently happening would make all the difference. My biggest resolution this year is to *finally* get my weight/health under control.

Happy New Year!

Yay for training for a race. I am training for the Kentucky Derby half this April! Its a rush

mandy January 10, 2010 at 1:11 pm

I am completely with you on #8. I need to be more brave too.

Love your list. It makes me realize I need to do some self-reflection and come up with my own thoughtful list.

I think those are lovely goals. I am trying to focus on being all “here” – wherever I am, but it's definitely hard when you're in a long-distance relationship and you're constantly thinking about the next time you get to see him. But, I'm working on it.

I would love to start to expand my freelance writing career. I don't see myself standing on my own two feet with it by the end of 2010, but by the end of 2012 that is my goal so I'm going to start working towards it now!

I love your goals! I think they're well-rounded and totally manageable – take one or two at a time and you'll nail it :)

Those sounds like great goals, I think you're gonna have a great year!

This is a great list. I agree on being active, I SO need to do the same and being “here.” I have a tendency to not be in the present and always look ahead. I need to focus on the now.

I joined a CSA in NYC and it was incredible. Except for the time I got an enormous box filled entirely with kale. Because, like, who eats kale?

Very good stuff! “Be all here”- so important, but hard to do all the time. I will take that one to heart!

Andrea January 10, 2010 at 9:28 pm

I just made my own list too! De-stressing, organization and punctuality are what I really need to tackle, but we both wrote that we need to write more (I swear I didn't see your list before I wrote mine). I think we can do it.

Jessica January 10, 2010 at 10:19 pm

I love your resolutions. I definitely want to write more too!

I'm so excited for this year! So many possibilities. :)

I love all of your goals. They're so positive and inspiring.

I've been working harder on the “be all here.” I focus one each day, each task at hand and try not to look too far forward into the future. Sometimes, though, I do. It's a hard thing to balance!

I don't think I could handle a triathalon but I'm running a 10 mile race over Memorial Day weekend in Chicago if you want to join!?

Melissa January 11, 2010 at 11:51 am

I love these. I think they're all really important goals, & really reasonable too.
Also- yay for finally being exactly where you want to be!

kimwithak January 11, 2010 at 12:24 pm

These are great resolutions. I haven't made any and I don't think I plan to. I just plan to learn the lessons that come my way and make the best of things.

Which I guess is a sorta resolution. :)

ria January 11, 2010 at 1:02 pm

great list. i could afford to follow most of those myself.

katelin January 11, 2010 at 5:11 pm

those are some fabulous goals. being choosy about what i eat and volunteering are definitely on my list to do this year as well, i really have to work on doing both quite actively.

AuburnKat January 11, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Great list! I hope you accomplish everything that you want to! =)

Jamie January 11, 2010 at 7:03 pm

I'm planning on being brave this year too.

And to hang out with you :)

Susan January 11, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I need to work on #1.

Meghan January 11, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Those are some great goals. Good luck with them.Very inspiring.

steph anne January 11, 2010 at 10:11 pm

I like this post! I agree with you on #3 about paying attention to what kind of food we put in our bodies. I hope to continue to do that and not forget how good I feel after eating healthy & exercising. Good luck with your goals!

AMinDinMoTown January 13, 2010 at 12:53 pm

Great goals to have and I really think you can accomplishment them with no worries. Best of luck!

Andhari January 14, 2010 at 8:44 am

I love your last resolution :) a lot of people somehow forgot to put in theirs. It's important to challenge ourselves, get out of the comfort zone once in a while.

ps. is there any pill I can take to make me stop eating french fries? i like it sooo much! But one of my goals is also stop eating so much junks :p

stephcorwin January 16, 2010 at 1:58 pm

I totally agree with the first goal! I need to do that as well. It seems like something small, but it requires a lot of work. I did a sprint triathlon a year ago, and it's really not too hard to train for. The hardest part is the run since it's the last leg of the race. I hope you do it! The accomplishment you feel afterwards is unequaled.
