On wedding planning

2009 October 26
by E.P.

Like most recently-engaged girls, I’ve been enjoying the numerous bridal magazines I picked up at the store (and the library!)

I have started a binder and am tearing out pages as needed from these said magazines. (Unless, of course, they’re from the library, and then I’m scanning them and printing them out.) You know, to help with the wedding planning.

One of the first things on my mind, other than setting a date and finding a location is my dress. Because there are so many beautiful (and gaudy) gowns out there. And, to top the gorgeousness off, some ads? Are absolutely ridiculous.

The following is one of my favorites, and my friend Rose and I spent quite some time giggling about it. Trust me. You’ll see it immediately, too.

I mean, honestly? The groom clearly is there to accentuate the bride’s beauty — that’s it. And to not wear anything at all…

Also? The groom looks pasted into a lot of ads like this. (We found another one tonight that I need to scan.) And that makes me laugh, too, but it’s the nudity that really tops it off for me.

Who made that decision? And how in the WORLD could they think it was a good idea? Because I seriously doubt any groom I know would simply stand around in the nude while his bride hangs out in her dress.

Just sayin’…

  • You should definitely mimick that in your wedding. Sure, it'll be surprising to everyone at first and horrifying to most old people, but then everyone will be excited because, if the ceremony's got nudity, think of the reception! What a party that would be.
  • Haha, that WOULD make it a fantastic party, huh?
  • Wow, that definitely made me laugh. That's the most ridiculous ad I've ever seen.
  • Isn't it, though? I've laughed about it a lot recently, as I've seen the same ad in magazines over and over.
  • Haha!!
  • I know, right?!
  • Ok, this is too funny. And weird. And kind of creepy.
  • Ha yeah. I mean... I guess I'm just easily distracted by nudity.
  • Nora_L
My stupid computer won't let me see the picture. le Sigh.

At any rate, I'm glad you're enjoying wedding planning. And I miss you too! And yes, we must hang out soon. LOVE YOU!
  • Aww, sad. I've been having issues finding the original post. :/

I am enjoying it, even though I've let it stress me out sometimes. It's so easy to get overwhelmed, and you have to take a step back to say, 'The end result of this is what I want.'

Yay! I love you and miss you and we will hang out!
  • HOW DID I MISS THE ENGAGEMENT?!?!?!

    OH
    MY
    GOD!

    CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Heh, I don't know, but THANKS! SO much!

It's such an exciting time. I still get gushy about it just thinking about things...
  • Hey lady... just found your blog and I love it!

Just wait until you actually go try on dresses... I swear you have to be a certain level of crazy before you can get a job at a dress shop!
  • Hey, thanks for stopping by!

You work at a dress shop?! Wow. I can only imagine the things you have to
deal with. Though I'm really excited about trying them on. I promise I won't
    be a crazy bride. ;)
  • Hey, thanks so much!

I cannot wait 'till I try on dresses, but I cannot even imagine the kind of craziness you dealt with working at a dress shop. I don't want to be a dramatic bride. I think that makes it easier on everyone, right?
  • ria
lol marketing has some weird ideas
  • True, but it appears to be working. Which is so weird to me!

The guy still distracts me from the dress, though.
  • True, but this weird marketing idea seems to be working. But I don't remember the brand name, so maybe not...
  • I may be the odd one out, but it took me a second to notice the nudity--haha! These are hysterical! I can't wait to see your binder in person!!
  • Oh, too funny! Aren't they?

And my binder is going to be SO RIDICULOUS when you see it. Just saying and
    warning you, in advance...
  • Aww, too funny! You are more focused than most of us, then. ;)

My binder is going to be so RIDICULOUS when you get to see it. Seriously. It's growing by leaps and bounds.
  • Hilarious and awkward. Why are they standing at the bottom of gray staircases?
  • No idea. Your guess is as good as mine.
  • Haha, I know. And your guess to the staircase is as good as mine...
  • I can't concentrate on the dresses with the naked men in the way.
  • Haha, it was the same for me!

    Stuff like that is distracting!
  • You and me both. Glad I'm not the only one!
  • libbydempsey
    lmao - that is...wow.
  • Haha, I know, right?
  • I know, right?!
  • Have fun planning! :)
  • Thanks, lady!
  • Thanks, lady!
  • Wow that is HILARIOUS. I love that the guy is nude, I've NEVER seen that and my focus is definitely not on the bride
  • Isn't it? I was so surprised and shocked by the guy at first that I didn't
    even notice the gown!
  • You and me both. It took me a little time to notice the dress. I mean, nudity is distracting.
  • um just wow, that's a little ridiculous. hilarious, but ridiculous.
  • Exactly. Hilarious, but ridiculous.

Because that's TOTALLY going to happen...
  • Haha, exactly!
  • Haha, it took me a minute to notice because I was so taken with the dresses, engaged much?
  • Haha, love it! Do you have your dress already?
  • Aww, too funny! Have you found your dress yet!?
  • I did, I think...

The place I found it is run by one woman. She was on vacation for a couple
of weeks so I am waiting to take my mom to show her before I buy. She's
supposed to be back this week, but her voicemail says she's out due to a
    death in the family.

Hopefully it's still the "one" because I haven't been looking since I found
it a few weeks ago :)

    How are your plans?
  • YESSyesyesyes! I've been waiting for the wedding planning-related blog fodder to begin and here it is! (Okay so I might be living vicariously through you. Just kidding. Maybe.)

I haven't looked at many bridal mags (cuz I'd get sucked in and tell Pete more often than I already do that babe? I wanna get marrrrried... *cough*) but I have seen some pretty ridiculous set-ups in the photos. BUT nothing like that. Naked? Groom? Really? Wow.
  • Aww, you make me smile. I don't know how much wedding planning blogging
there will be, simply because I don't want to bore everyone. And we have
absolutely NOTHING planned so far, other than three potential dates and my
bridesmaids. Eh. It's coming along slowly.

Isn't that ridiculous? But then again, a lot of the bridal ads I've seen are
    pretty ridiculous...
  • You make me smile! I don't know how much of this wedding planning-related blog fodder there will be simply because I don't want to make others feel like it's all that I think about. (Because, contrary to popular opinion, my brain is only like 75% full of all things wedding-related.) But it's a lot of fun. And I look forward to actually nailing down the date, the location, and then getting into the details.

Some of the photos really are ridiculous. And as a photographer, I get a good laugh out of some of them, especially the ones where a man's head is pasted into the photo without regard to proportion or anything like that. It makes for a good laugh while you're flipping through pages and pages of ads.
  • hahahaha.

    hahahaha.

i know that when i get married i definitely want just ONE of us to be naked. i mean... once you're married aren't you supposed to do things TOGETHER? ha. ha ha ha.
  • Haha, you've got a point there. And your comment just made me laugh. Love
    it!
  • And your comment just made me laugh out loud.

You've got quite a point, lady. And I cannot imagine any groom sitting patiently (in the nude!) while his bride poses/shows off her gown some more. I just cannot see that happening...
  • =( Why can't I see the picture? Boo hiss... It's probably my computer.
  • Major boo hiss.

I am trying to find the original post so y'all can see it...
  • Major boo hiss. Looking up the link for y'all so you can see it, too.
  • Hilarious!
So... that will be your wedding theme, right?
  • Umm... yes. Naked groom and me in a princess-y dress?

Heh. It sounds like a fantastic idea to me! ;)
  • Umm... yes. That sounds like the perfect theme that ANY bride would want. :)
  • Oh my word. I'm dying.
  • Isn't that just ABSURD?

When I first saw the ad, I didn't even notice the dress.
  • Heh. It's interesting, no?
  • Wait, WHAT?
  • Umm, yeah. Isn't it ridiculous?
  • I know, I know! That was my first reaction when I saw this ad IN A MAGAZINE.
  • I'm so with brandy. I'm like dress? What dress?

    Too funny!
  • That's exactly the same reaction I had. And then lots and lots of laughter.

    Because I'm mature like that...
  • I know, right? Ridiculous.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one distracted by the naked man.
  • Ooooh, wedding planning! I kind of want to get married JUST so I can plan a wedding, famous last words right? Haha.

That picture won't work on my computer for some reason, but it sounds ridiculous!
  • Haha. That's awesome. I was never the girl who had anything thought out or
planned for my wedding (other than a list of things I DON'T want), so I feel
like I'm kind of scrambling. But this whole planning thing is a lot of fun,
even if budgeting and other things are sometimes a pain in the ass.
  • Ah, it's a good time. And you'll get your chance. When you first get started with it all, it's a little overwhelming. I really look forward to knocking some things off my checklist so I can get into the details. (:
  • First of all, aren't weddings all about fantasy? When you think about it, this ad makes sense. It's all about fantasy. Second, whoever thought about putting a naked man in an ad was brilliant. They've gotten at least two bloggers to write about it and a host of others thinking about it. No one ever said advertising had to make sense!!!
  • And you just hit the nail on the head! I totally didn't think about this
until I saw your comment was like, "Oh. That totally makes sense!"
  • And you've just hit the nail on the head. I didn't think of ANY of this until your comment. Now, I'm like, "Hmm. It does kind of make sense!"

I still stand by that the guy's butt distracts from the gown, though.. ;)
  • Stephanie
Typical groom! For the girl it's all about the dress and for the groom it's all about getting the dress off.

    Hysterical!!!!
  • Ha! Exactly!

As one of my friends put it once before a dance when I was young and
innocent, "It doesn't matter what the dress looks like. What he'll notice is
when it's crumpled up on the ground."
  • Love it! And that makes me laugh. Because a friend of mine once told me before a dance (when I was young and innocent), that "it doesn't matter what your dress looks like on. It matters what it looks like on the bedroom floor."

I was officially mortified at his comment. And I still kind of am, thinking about who said it.
  • I can't see the picture!! =/ Can you link to the original post?
  • Oh no! Let me see if I can look that up real quick for you...
  • Well, boo. I'm going to try to look it up so y'all can see it. Hrm.
  • Ben
    Um. I'd marry him.
  • Heh. He DOES have a nice behind...

The nudity, though, just kind of throws me off. Sure, it's brilliant and
makes people look twice, but the groom being undressed as the bride stands
and poses in her gown? Impossible...
  • And I officially love you. (:
  • That as absolutely crazy! Although that dress on the left is GORGEOUS. Hope you're having fun planning!
  • Isn't it? It makes me laugh. I've seen some ridiculous things so far.
And I know I'll see a lot more before this journey is done.
  • Thanks so much! I've been having a lot of fun planning so far. It's an adventure and has provided for MANY laughs in these few short weeks.
  • writetoreach
Ha ha, that picture is the most ridiculous thing ever. I'm with you. Who ever thought that was a good idea? Have fun with the planning!
  • Isn't it? Thinking about it makes me laugh, as well as thinking about other
random ads I've seen where I guy's face has been PASTED INTO the ad, without
a regard for how the human figure looks. And proportions. (:

Thanks so much! It has been fun so far, and I hope it continues to be!
  • Thanks so much! And I'm glad you think it's ridiculous, too.

Maybe it was a good idea since so many of us have seen it now? Now, if only I could remember the name of the dress...
  • brandyismagic
Whoa! That's.... memorable. Although I have to admit- it doesn't make me notice the dress. At all!
  • Hahaha. Me neither. I was distracted by the guy's ass for the first
minute of looking at that ad...
  • I know, right? I was so distracted at first that I totally didn't notice the dress...
