It was a calm winter night as Emily, Sean and I were driving away from a friend’s house on the way back to campus.
I sat in the back seat, taking in the orange street lights that lined the road as we made our way onto and then flew down the highway.
Emily turned on the stereo, and this song began playing.
Sean rolled down all the windows, screaming, “Freeze out!” over the chilly air rushing into the sedan.
(For those of you who don’t know, Freeze Out is a game you play during the winter in the car. You roll down all the windows, shed as many layers as you can before players get too cold and put back on their clothes. The person who lasts the longest with the least amount of clothes on wins. A version of this is played the during the summer where you turn up the heat in the car and ADD clothes. *dies*)
Laughter filled the air.
Since Emily was driving, she couldn’t participate. Sean was eagerly pulling off his jacket, his shirt, his shoes, his socks, and then turned back to look at me.
I was shy in those days. I didn’t want to take off any of my layers because I was already freezing since the windows were down.
To appease my friend, I slowly shrugged out of my winter coat, and then my cardigan and dropped them haphazardly on the floor board.
He turned back around and shed some more layers until he was down to an undershirt and boxers.
The song was playing in the background and I giggled intermittently as I sang along, dodging discarded clothing as Sean threw them into the back seat.
We laughed for the rest of the drive at the ridiculousness of the game. And whenever I think about that night, I know that is one of the college memories I will never forget.
I finally understood what Charlie meant.
In that moment, we were infinite.
