I love my dog, but those pests on her? Not cool.

by E.P. on October 16, 2008

The dog training bubble was burst swiftly last night, and it wasn’t something that Lucy did.

Some of you may remember a tweet I shared last week. A tweet about how I woke up with a baby tick crawling on my back (Lucy woke me up by frantically barking — she might have saved me from Lyme disease) and how I was going to dip my dog, trim her, spray the apartment and bomb it.

Monday morning, Lucy went to the groomer. I received a call from them around 10 saying they didn’t find ANY ticks or fleas on her. And I didn’t bomb the apartment because of this — I just sprayed, figuring the tick I found crawling on me was an isolated incident since she didn’t have any more and since I hadn’t seen anymore crawling around my apartment.

That was probably my first mistake.

I picked Lucy up in the early afternoon. They had clipped her hair back to check for pests. And I did a once-over of her newly trimmed coat. I didn’t feel anything.

We went to the dog park to meet up with a friend and her pup Tuesday morning. That was probably my second mistake.

And we went walking through the neighborhood yesterday morning. That was probably the third mistake.

You can see what’s coming, right? Uh huh?

After I’d gotten home from work last night, Lucy was sitting with me on the couch, and I was petting her back.

Oddly enough, I noticed a little lump near her right shoulder and went to inspect it, hoping it wasn’t what I expected.

Lo and behold, a tiny tick was attached to her skin. And I screamed out of exasperation and anger.

Where the HELL did that little bugger come from? Did they not do a good enough job inspecting my dog at the groomer? Was the dog park not sprayed recently and that’s where all these baby ticks originated? Or did she step in something on our walk and the tick migrate up her body?

I don’t know, and it makes me crazy. Because if I don’t know where the bloodsuckers came from, it makes things a little more challenging as to how I can make them better.

Last week when I frantically called the vet after finding the tick on ME, I was told to bring her into them if I found any more on her. That looks like what we will be doing this morning, so Lucy can feel better if she’s not feeling so hot because of those little creatures that want to make her their home.

I will be calling the apartment complex AGAIN to see if they can send someone out to spray for ticks even though the manager didn’t think it would help out. Ugh. And I will be bombing my apartment eventually if I can find some time where Lucy and I can be out of the apartment together.

… This whole tick thing? A pain in the ass.

Have any of y’all dealt with ticks (or fleas) before? Any advice? Because I’m at a loss right now (other than these ideas.) And while I’ve had a dog my entire life, we luckily never had to deal with something like this. And I don’t get why these baby ticks won’t go away. She takes her flea and tick medicine EVERY month at the same time. I don’t allow her to go tromping around in yards I don’t know for fear of fleas and ticks. And our apartment complex shouldn’t have them lurking in the grass, though maybe they are. Who knows?

Plus, more than anything, I’m tired of freaking myself out that something creepy crawly is making its way up my back or leg EVERY time I sit down.

  • I have bloodsuckers. Except for vampires because they are pretty cool. I have no advice as to the ticks but how very frustrating. You would think the groomer would be on top of that a little more! Maybe you should try the vet?
  • Oh that sucks! I' m not very familiar with ticks. We always get a collar for Penny when we go out camping but she's never got any, not even from when we go to a dog park. I wonder if they're contagious?

I'm sorry I'm not helping, but I hope you work it out!
  • have you asked your vet about Frontline for Lucy... it's a liquid you apply on top of their back before their head! my mom and I always put in on my pup and she's protected... ticks are the worst - so nasty!!! Sorry you had to deal with this!
  • Yeah the idea of ticks and them moving from the dog onto me creeps me out. Seriously. That would be a big crazy issue for me.
  • How awful!!! I don't let my cats outside at all but then again, if I had a dog it would be a different story!
  • it's fall... it happens. i wouldn't worry too much about it after only finding two. i live in an area where it's pretty common, so sorry for the lack of alarm!

it's stressful though and it definitely sucks!!
  • Ahhhh!! I feel like I need a shower now! You poor girl, I'm sorry I have no experience with ticks of fleas- actually, I don't think I am sorry about that, but I AM sorry I can't give you any advice. My fingers are crossed that this situation gets remedied soon so you don't have to bomb your place and become homeless.

    Hey EP,
I know this is the "guy" answer, but seriously... based on 13 years with Buddy and another 4 with Bunky... you don't worry about it.

No, seriously- don't worry about it.

Dogs get ticks. It's annoying. You pick them off - check your dog when he (Buddy) or she (Lucy) gets back from the park or running around in the country (at Uncle David's place, don't think you ever came out to Eads, way out 64.. anyway). There is basically zero risk of something bad happening. Look, I even looked it up for you- http://www.dogsandticks.com/US-map-lyme-disease... . So yea its an annoyance... but your apartment manager happens to be right on this one, there's nothing to be done - dogs will be dogs, they'll pick ticks up SOMEwhere, ANYwhere, unless you just keep your dog locked in your apartment. So just check, pick 'em off, and drive on.

Oh, look, that same site I just checked says pretty much the same thing... the whole "ask your vet" thing is sortof like how you have to "ask your doctor" before you get on a treadmill, its just a CYA (cover your.... ). http://www.dogsandticks.com/tips-protect-your-d...

And for the record, I get ticks when I'm out in the field, too. Check when I get back, and pick 'em off. /shrug.

OK that got a bit long, but I felt I had to post this for you and for other folks. Call me sometime!
  • Yuck! Ticks are terrible. Rufus had one once, but I never did figure out where it came from.
  • Ugh. I'm dealing with fleas. None of my dogs ever had fleas before and I've ALWAYS had a dog since I was a baby. I think it's Edie's longer fur. But it's making me crazy. I've bought powders, sprays, shampoos, collars and feel like they just won't go away.

I'd like to bomb my house but my dog plus my dad's dogs would be so hard to find somewhere else to go for 6 hours.

I feel like I'm just at a loss and will have to keep vacumming, powdering, spraying, shampooing forever :(
  • In all my years of owning a dog I have never had to deal with ticks or fleas, so I don't really have any advice. Sorry!

    Good luck!!
  • Oh eww.

I don't want a dog anymore, never mind. Haha. Sorry I have absolutely NO advice!
  • awe - i don't have any good advice as i'm in the same boat you were.. i've had pups my whole life, but have never had to deal with ticks or fleas.
good luck though - hope you and lucy are tick-free in no time!
  • I hate hate hate ticks! Judy had a tick, this is gross but --- it was yellow and disgustingly full of her blood. I screamed as well and then made Jake rip it out of her skin and then we burned it with a match. Which felt great.

I've had dogs my entire life and fleas/ticks are no stranger to me! They're annoying at best. Especially when they invade your house and you have to bomb it. I had to bomb my house a few times back in the day - just make sure you do it early in the morning when you have the day off and take Lucy somewhere fun! I'd say a park, but since she got those ticks at the park, that's probably a bad idea. The Fall season is always bad to take dogs to the parks because fleas/ticks are in prime. Good luck with everything and let us know how you make out!
  • Oh no!

When we brought our beagle pup home, she was unfortunately crawling with little yellow fleas. I gave her a flea bath every day or two, and we gave her flea medicine, but she was too small still for the flea collars. It took about a month of constant care before we finally got rid of the little suckers.

Hopefully in your case it's just two isolated incidents forming a coincidence. I hope the vet can suggest something helpful!

Ahhhhhhh! Ticks would freak me out! Bugs in general are not my friend and the bane of my existence with short, low to the ground pups. We haven't had any flea problems either thankfully but we treat them monthly with meds for those sort of things and heartworm, etc.

Disappointing that the vet/groomer didn't have any better answers for you. At least that might help the gross mental games you get stuck with in terms of feeling itchy and all.
