Yesterday afternoon during a thunderstorm, I was brought back to the time where my biggest worry was whether or not I would be able to play thirty extra minutes before dinner.
When I was a child, I was obsessed with the weather. Fascinated with it would be a better description, though. I probably owned every children’s book about how thunderstorms and tornadoes formed, what happened when lightning struck and how thunder made the noise it did. Obviously, I was awesome/nerdy.
One summer afternoon when my little sister was taking a nap, my mother and I were making chocolate chip cookie dough. I couldn’t have been any older than five. From the kitchen, we observed an afternoon shower pop up out of nowhere.
And for whatever reason, we made the decision to go out onto the back porch and watch the storm as it passed as the dough chilled in the fridge.
My mother turned on the television before we walked out the door to sit on the covered patio. She left the back door open so we could listen in case the storm became severe. (I would have secretly loved this, but she made it clear that if it was declared severe, we were heading back inside to the center of the house and grabbing my sister so we would all be safe.)
We sat cross-legged on the cool cement patio together, not saying a word, and ate cookie dough off spoons.
Whenever there is a summer afternoon storm, I’m brought back to that day, for whatever reason. It stands out in my mind, and I am positive it was the only time my mother and I did that. It was a treat.
So yesterday while it thundered, lightning-ed and poured outside my apartment, I opened the screen door to the covered balcony. Lucy and I sat inside my apartment with the door open, listening and watching the storm pass by.
It was incredible. And the only thing that could have made it better would have been cookie dough.

I'm E.P. I have stylish handwriting. I enjoy a nice cappuccino in the morning. And I am fascinated with capturing life as it is.

We had amazing thunder here last night too. I love it and count my blessings that my dogs aren’t afraid of it either.
i loooove cookie dough and i used to be in awe over rainstorms etc too..I was also really into dinosaurs
I love watching storms as well. But more importantly, I LOVE cookie dough. That does make everything better.
I love being outside on a patio and listening to the storms. I especially love falling asleep to the sound of rainfall. That’s sheer bliss to me.
aww I love this post! I love it when something triggers childhood memories…sometimes I wish I could go back in time.
I love listening to storms too..well, as long as it doesn’t become dangerous
Isn’t it funny how the most random things triggers things from your past? I love thunderstorms, especially falling asleep to them!
That was a nice story.. I love that you still remember your mom opening the screen door.. And that’s nice you shared it with Lucy, LOL… I like storms too, the rain at least.. Thunder, not so much!
What an awesome, powerful memory. I bet your mother had no idea that would stick so hard and become a small piece of you forever. I wonder what kinds of things I’m doing with MY kids that they’ll remember like that. Hopefull more good things than bad.
I hateeeee storms. and rain. I think I might have SAAD. I dislike ugly weather and it makes me grumpy.
There is nothing better than sitting and listening to the pouring rain. I can picture you and Lucy making that memory together. Adorable.
I love storms, I even love getting caught out in the rain and getting soaked (if I have no where to go that requires me to not look like a drowned rat…). On several trips to the USA I have observed that you guys get much bigger storms than us and have spent a lot of time out on hotel balconys watching them. As long as they don’t cause damage to anyone, they are OK by me!
while i may not have been QUITE as awesome/nerdy as you as a kid, i’ve ALWAYS loved storms. Loved, loved, loved. And I adore your childhood memory with your momma.
I’m not into rain too much…
but I can eat cookie-dough by the handfuls
I LOVE afternoon thunderstorms. Well, any thunderstorm, really. I like watching and listening to them during the day (as long as I can relax inside and don’t have to get drenched outside!), and at night they put me to sleep so easily. They’re so relaxing!
Thunderstorms keep me asleep. We had a bad one last night in Chicago and I slept like a baby. Bacci was startled but slept. How is lucy with storms?
I really love watching it rain and thunder. We used to sit out on the porch of a house in northern WI and watch it storm. There was something so soothing about it.
