Because the day needed to be STRANGER

by E.P. on June 24, 2008

Yesterday when I was walking out of the office to my car for an assignment, I collided with a bumble bee.

A BUMBLE BEE.

(Yes, I realize I am A LOT larger than a bee, but still. We were both moving. And it totally happened, even though it transpired in about 10 seconds.)

It was buzzing along — clearly not paying attention — and smacked into my left eye as I was stepping down onto the asphalt and stunning me for a few seconds.

Once I realized whatever had hit me was NOT stuck in my eye, I heard a buzzing noise and turned to see the bee crash into the bumper of the editor’s car before recovering and flying away, dazed.

And while the bee did NOT sting me, I was a little shocked for the rest of the day.

I told my boss about it when I came back inside. And his question was, “Well, what kind of bee was it? You certainly got a good look!”

  • I would have run away screaming.. I am such a baby when it comes to bees!!
  • Oh scary!!! I love looking at big fat bumble bees, but if they come anywhere near me, I freak out!
  • Hahaha - How ODD is that!?

It must have been one confused little bee!
  • Yowza! I was biking one day along the streets of LA and didn't realize until it was too late that I was about to ride through a whole hive of bees. The swarmed around my head but once I was past them they didn't follow me, fortunately.
  • hahahahaha! that's hilarius what your boss said. I stepped on a bumble bee last year, it was awful, I thought i was dying and I called my husband to tell him I was having anaphylactic shock (hey, i had never been stung before in my life so I didnt know pain was normal) and he said "well, i guess it's too late now for me to go home, by the time I get there you'll be gone."
  • Gah! I'm so scared of bees. I never have been stung and plan on keeping it that way. This is why I run away like a sissy when one comes near!

You turned something that could have been disastrous into something funny. A bumblebee collision. Gold.

I SWEAR bees are getting to be like 8lb flying monsters. They're HUGE now! I don't believe this "the bees are disappearing" crap...they're not disappearing, they just take longer to get places because they're the size of flying BABIES.
  • OUCH! I'm so glad it didn't sting you right in the eye. geesh.

Ok so I'm glad you didn't get stung, that would've kaned!

But still you just made my laugh on an otherwise unlaughable day. Not that I'm laughing at yours or the bee's mis-fortune... :)
  • omg scary!!! I hate anything in my eye...a bee would definitely scare the bejeesus out of me! Im glad you're ok!
  • OMG that is so scary. I collided with a bee in my neck once on a bike ride. Little shit stung me too. That was one quick trip to the ER. I'm so glad you weren't stung, Scary.
