An extended inside joke that keeps recycling itself…

by E.P. on June 24, 2008

Ever since my cousin uttered the phrase “beach beach” one sunny day when we were driving toward the ocean years ago, it was love.

Since then (and since my sister and I, who are considerably younger than our cousin, finally saw the videotape), we have been ALL ABOUT saying things twice.

Maybe it’s the fact that my mother is a teacher, and she appreciates strange things kids say. Maybe it’s because I worked with children every summer for four years, and my sister is now doing something similar to what I did. Or maybe it’s because we all have an off-color sense of humor when it comes to things like this.

It’s also possible we continue doing this because we enjoy poking fun of the cousin, too.

Whatever the case, we LOVE it.

For example, my mom’s dog. You’d be hard-pressed to find one of us actually calling her Callie. Listen for Cal Cal or Pup Pup or Love Love.

My sister’s dog, Ella Mae? Mae Mae.

Spring break last year took 15 friends and me to the beach beach. What makes it better was that by the time we left, everyone else was calling it the beach beach. They found it just as amusing as me.

I’ve even gotten my boy doing it.

Whenever we talk about my future dog, he’ll occasionally call it a pup pup or a ruff ruff.

But it doesn’t just pertain to dogs and the beach. Oh, no.

It can be used to describe people, too. Preferably the ones closest to you. (So they don’t think you are a complete weird-o.)

This morning, I listened to this message on my phone:

Hey, love love. This is your mom. Call me back back.

I kid you not.

While I realize it could get a little annoying, I don’t think any of us use it THAT much.

And no matter what other people say or how strange they think it is, we all just laugh because it’s an extended inside joke that is constantly revamping itself and occasionally lets new folks in. (And you’re now in on it, freaders!) Because who doesn’t love one of those? And isn’t it fun to say something twice, if not just for dramatic effect or to poke fun of someone else?

Exactly.

  • hahah, my friend has been nicknamed "jen jen" for as long as i've known her because of the same thing. she was talking to our coach and asked if we were going to the "field" or the "field field".
    and it's stuck =)
  • I love it!!! Too cute...
  • That's pretty darn cute. I love it!
  • bring on the double speak speak

my teenage cousin whenever she instant messages with me for whatever reason adds an extra letter on almost every word.

    ie

"love you lexx i can't waitt to see you tomorroww, have a greatt dayy!"

    oh, kidss
  • I love the double word thing. I will try to incorporate it into my speak speak!
  • lovez it :) i do that sometimes too haha-haha :)
  • tipptalk
I Love Love cute family sayings!
  • I love it! Every family has their quirky funny thing- like mine, por ejemplo, is we insult each other. That's how we show affection. But yours sounds a lot nicer, which is nice, because after a while, you don't know if they're kidding or if they really mean those things... kinda confusing. but anyway, going back to you you, look at it this way, it's nice because if you ever get in trouble with your mom mom, she won't be in the mood to repeat things, so when she's like "call me, it's your mom" then you know not to call. just an idea!
  • Hey, just wanted to say that I got the package today, thanks so much! I looooooove pralines and am totally going to have to resist eating it like, right now.
  • Boyfriend and I basically have our own language. No one knows what we are talking about half the time haha
  • Ben
Oh see, I add a 'y' onto the first one.

"Want to go to the beachy beach?"

"Oh, I sent you a faxy fax."

    "I need a snacky snack."
  • That's adorable. My mom and I use completely inappropriate terms as terms of endearment. "Love you, whore!" "Love you too, slut!" TBNJoe and I have taken to LOLspeak from LOLcats and we "nom nom nom" our food. (God we're sorta really gross...)
  • My family is full of weird little rituals and sayings... My Mom rarely just says "I Love You" she says "Love you. Mean it!" When she first figured out how to text message, thats the only message I received from her weeks. haha
And we still use my brother and my babywords for lots of real life objects. Oh and don't even get me started on the nicknames!!

Thanks for letting us in our your inside joke!!
